An enskild firma (sole trader) is the simplest business structure in Sweden: one owner, no start-up capital requirement, and no separate legal entity. Registration is a two-track process, one track voluntary, one mandatory. This page follows the rules as published by Bolagsverket.
Who can register
You need a Swedish personal identity number (personnummer) or a co-ordination number (samordningsnummer) when registering as a sole trader in Sweden. Without either, see starting a business in Sweden as a foreign citizen.
Track 1: Bolagsverket registration (normally voluntary)
Registering with Bolagsverket is voluntary for most sole traders, with defined exceptions listed on Bolagsverket’s “Obligation to register” page. What voluntary registration buys:
- Business name protection in the county of registration: the registered name cannot be used by another business registered in the same county.
- A certificate of registration.
The steps:
- Apply using form “Registration as a sole trader”, number 903 e, or apply online at verksamt.se if you have a Swedish electronic identification. The e-service is in Swedish only.
- Submit additional details if Bolagsverket asks. Questions and replies are handled through email via verksamt.se.
- Bolagsverket registers the business after approving the proposed business name. The processing time is normally about one to two weeks, and a certificate of registration is sent in Swedish.
Practical warning from Bolagsverket: do not order a domain name or printed material before the business name has been approved and registered.
Track 2: Skatteverket registration (mandatory)
Every sole trader must register with the Swedish Tax Agency. In the online route, this happens in the same application: when registering online, an F-tax card application and VAT accounting registration can be submitted to Skatteverket at the same time. F-tax is what lets clients pay without deducting tax, and it is the registration clients will ask for; see how to apply for F-skatt. VAT applies above the turnover threshold; see VAT for small businesses in Sweden.
What registration costs
There is no start-up capital requirement. Bolagsverket charges fees only for specific registrations, such as registering the business name; check the current fee list on Bolagsverket’s sole trader fees page before applying.
After registration
The business result is declared inside the personal income return, with the NE-bilaga attached to Inkomstdeklaration 1. The full chain of forms and deadlines is covered in the Swedish small business forms guide and the 2026 tax deadlines.
