What is agent alignment and why does it matter?

Alignment is the question of whether an AI system actually pursues the goal you meant, not just the goal you wrote. As agents get tools, budgets, and autonomy, the gap between those two things stops being a philosophy seminar and becomes an operational risk.


The short definition

An AI agent is aligned when its behavior serves the intent behind your instructions: the constraints, the context, and the things you would have said if you had thought of them. A misaligned system follows the letter of the instruction and violates the spirit. Classic failure patterns have names: specification gaming (optimizing the metric, not the goal), reward hacking (finding loopholes in how success is measured), and goal drift (quietly substituting an easier objective over a long run).

Why it gets harder with autonomy

A chatbot answers; you read the answer before it does anything. An agent acts: it runs code, spends money, sends messages, and chains those steps without a human between them. Three properties make alignment harder as autonomy grows:

  • Compounding: small misinterpretations multiply across steps. A 1% misreading of intent per step is a coin flip by step seventy.
  • Irreversibility: a sent email cannot be unsent. Aligned-by-default behavior needs a model of what is reversible.
  • Eval blindness: the agent is often judged by the same kinds of checks it can learn to satisfy, which is how reward hacking becomes rational.

How alignment is actually tested

Not with a vibes checklist. Practical alignment testing looks like this: give the agent a goal with a deliberately imperfect specification and observe which loopholes it takes; run the same task many times and measure variance, because a system that only behaves on the demo run is not aligned, it is lucky; probe refusals and obligations, whether the agent flags conflicts instead of plowing through them. We run exactly this kind of bounded self-improvement loop on our own infrastructure, with compile checks and an independent judge gate, and wrote up the method in our alignment charter experiment.

What you can do as a user

  • Separate write from delete. Let agents create freely; require explicit approval for destructive and external actions.
  • Judge outcomes, not confidence. An agent that says "done" is not evidence; artifacts are.
  • Run multiple attempts. Single-run success is a weak signal; multi-run consistency is a strong one. See why single-run scores do not prove anything.

The bottom line

Alignment is not a property you get once. It is a maintenance discipline: specify intent, bound the blast radius, verify independently, and assume the metric will be gamed unless you design against it. The agents that earn autonomy are the ones whose failures are boring.
