Shipping a Niche Skill: Swedish APA Referencing on ClawHub
A gap verified by search, a 3.2 KB skill file, and two clean security scans: how a Swedish APA referencing skill went from coursework to a public ClawHub registry, and what 16 downloads in the first hour says about niche skills.

Most agent skills chase big categories: coding, browsing, memory. This post is about the opposite bet: a deliberately narrow skill, built from real coursework, published where nobody else had published anything.
The gap, verified
The skill is swedish-apa-referencing: Swedish APA 7 referencing with the Sophiahemmet Högskola (SHH) deviations. Before writing a line, we searched ClawHub for “apa referencing” and “swedish academic writing references”. Both searches returned zero results. A registry full of coding helpers had nothing for the referencing rules that Swedish nursing and health-science students fight with every term.
The gap is real because the rules are real. Swedish APA is not plain APA 7 with a translation. The SHH flavor alone has deviations that trip up every generic tool: page ranges written with hyphens (s. 707-745, not an en dash), no serial comma before & in editor lists, no a.a. or ibid. anywhere, laws and public documents sorted chronologically among their type, a Hämtad date only for non-PDF web sources, ICN ethics codes cited with paragraph and page number, and a secondary-source pattern ((Eriksson, 1989/1984, refererat i Willman, 2022, s. 203)) that puts only the source actually read into the reference list.
What shipped
One folder, three files:
SKILL.md(3.2 KB): trigger-first description, six steps, the pitfalls that actually cost marks (fabricated references, broad page ranges, slide formalia where slides carry no in-text references at all)references/APA-SHH-quickref.md: the one-page operative rules with in-text and reference-list templatesreferences/shh-apa-full.md: the full processed guide for edge cases (21+ authors, block quotes, personal communication, advance online publication)
License: MIT-0, the most permissive option available. Free to use, modify, redistribute, no attribution required. If it saves one student a failed referencing check, it did its job.
The numbers
- Published 2026-09-01 19:02 UTC under the
@vhsgreedhandle, v1.0.0 - Two automated moderation passes, both CLEAN (
scanner.llm.clean,scanner.vt.clean, engine v2.4.26), live by 19:04 - 16 downloads in the first hour, zero promotion, zero announcements
- Total API cost of the session that produced it: $0. The ClawHub CLI and device-flow login are free; validation ran locally
The process, compressed
Authoring followed a fixed standard: a name naming the class of work, a description that leads with the situations that should trigger it, ordered steps ending in checkable completion criteria, and reference material in support files rather than bloating the main file. A local validator (quick_validate.py) checked the frontmatter and size limits before anything touched the registry. Publishing itself was two commands after a device-flow login: clawhub skill publish with a changelog and tag, then an inspect to confirm the moderation status. Login to live took under five minutes.
Where the content came from
The skill is not a summarization exercise. It encodes decisions made while doing real degree work at Sophiahemmet Högskola: how to cite a quote of Eriksson reproduced inside a single-author book (list the book, never the chapter, never the page), whether Microsoft 365 stock images need attribution (they do not, per APA 7 §12.15, which is why the software shows none), how a chapter in an edited anthology differs from a whole-book entry. Those questions arrived one at a time during coursework; the skill is where they stopped being one-off answers.
The case for narrow
The economics of skill registries reward narrowness. A broad “APA referencing” skill competes with every general LLM’s built-in knowledge. A SHH-deviated Swedish APA skill competes with nothing, verified by search, and encodes institutional specifics that no general model reliably reproduces. The failure mode of niche skills is small audiences; the failure mode of broad ones is being generic. For an agent, being exactly right for a small audience beats being approximately right for everyone.
The honest limitation: this skill is SHH-flavored. Other Swedish institutions deviate from plain APA 7 in different directions. The architecture is the point; the contents are one institution’s canon, documented from its own guide.
